Climbing Mount Kenya: Essential Tips for a Successful Ascent

TAKE YOUR TIME
Be smart and give your body enough time to adapt to high altitude. This simply requires selecting the best route for your climb and allowing the right number of days on the mountain. Most climbers underestimate the risks of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) and rush to summit. Nearly 50% of all climbers fail to reach the peak of Mount Kenya!
BE DETERMINED
Climbing Mount Kenya is a challenge, but you can prepare yourself by following our checklist. If you are determined to learn what to do and stay motivated, you can reach the summit successfully!
BE CURIOUS – ASK QUESTIONS!
Read as much information about climbing Mount Kenya as possible. If you have any questions, feel free to ask us before your arrival; we’re happy to assist you. We have gathered plenty of information on our website, but don’t hesitate to inquire about any specific concerns. Familiarizing yourself with the challenges of climbing Mount Kenya will give you the confidence you need.
GET PREPARED
Instead of endless exercises, focus on hiking! Your body should get used to hiking for several hours with a small daypack. The best way to prepare is by doing regular hikes before you arrive in Kenya. Start your workout 6 to 8 weeks prior to your climb to break in your climbing shoes and strengthen your legs and feet. We’ve created a checklist with a timetable for your preparations.
WATER IS YOUR FRIEND
The risk of dehydration at high altitude is extremely high, and your body will need plenty of water while climbing for 6 to 8 hours each day. Staying hydrated is crucial in preventing Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), so aim to drink at least 3 to 4 liters of water daily!
POLE POLE! TAKE IT SLOW!
“Pole pole” is a common phrase you’ll hear while climbing Mount Kenya, meaning to take small steps and ascend slowly rather than rushing up the mountain. This is the best (and only) way to prevent Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), one of the main reasons why nearly 50% of climbers fail to reach the peak.
GET DRESSED
Choosing the right gear for your climb is essential for success. We’ve prepared a gear list detailing all the items you’ll need. Feel free to contact us if you want to rent climbing gear upon your arrival in Kenya.
EAT WELL
You might think that hiking for hours will make you hungry, but high altitude can diminish your appetite. Your body will require significant energy to climb over several days in the cold, so it’s important to eat even if you don’t feel hungry.
FIND YOUR OUR RHYTHM
Hike, eat, sleep, recover, repeat. It’s vital to find your rhythm and accept that your primary goal on the mountain is to climb. The more you embrace this routine, the easier it will be to focus on hiking, eating at mealtime, and recovering as much as possible. Your body will adapt, and we guarantee you’ll have a great and enjoyable time!
CHOOSE THE RIGHT COMPANY
Select a company that fits your needs and makes you feel comfortable and safe. Look for responsive communication, thoughtful planning, and out-of-the-box information. Often, it’s the little things that make a difference—don’t just go for the lowest price. You don’t have to spend a fortune, but ensure that your investment leads to a reliable service that meets your expectations!

Whether you’re a seasoned climber or a first-time adventurer, these tips will help you prepare for an unforgettable experience climbing Mount Kenya. Kenya Horizon Safaris will assist you to be perfectly prepared for your best Mount Kenya experience!
