How does an optional schedule for Mount Kenya look like?
Climbing Mount Kenya is an unforgettable adventure that offers stunning views, diverse wildlife, and a sense of accomplishment that few experiences can match. If you’re planning your climb and wondering about the best way to schedule your journey, you’re in the right place. In this guide, we’ll break down a possible schedule when arriving in Kenya from Nairobi for your Mount Kenya expedition. With Kenya Horizon Safaris, we’ll take care of every detail to ensure you have a stress-free, well-organized, and amazing experience.
Day 1: Arrival in Nairobi
Upon arriving at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi, you’ll begin your journey. Depending on your flight time, you’ll be picked up by the Kenya Horizon Safaris team and transferred to your accommodation in Nairobi. We recommend staying in a comfortable hotel so that you can rest after your long flight and prepare for your adventure.
In the evening, you’ll have a briefing with your Kenya Horizon Mountain Guide guide who will discuss the climb, the route, and any last-minute preparations. This is the perfect time to ask any questions about the logistics, safety, and what to expect during your Mount Kenya climb.
Day 2: Drive from Nairobi to Mount Kenya (Sirimon or Naro Moru Gate)
After a hearty breakfast, you will begin the scenic drive from Nairobi to Mount Kenya National Park, which takes about 3 to 4 hours depending on traffic. The drive offers stunning landscapes of the Kenyan countryside, giving you a taste of the natural beauty that awaits on the mountain.
Depending on your chosen route—whether Sirimon Gate or Naro Moru Gate—you’ll reach the park entrance in the early afternoon. Most climbers opt for the Sirimon Route as it provides a gradual ascent and is perfect for acclimatization. Upon arrival at the gate, you’ll meet your porters and guides who will help carry your gear. Your Kenya Horizon Safaris team will ensure that all permits are in order and that you’re fully equipped.
Once your group is ready, you’ll begin a short trek to Old Moses Camp (3,300 meters), which is about 3 to 4 hours of hiking. This easy trek helps you adjust to the altitude, and you’ll enjoy views of the beautiful high-altitude forest and moorlands along the way. Dinner will be served at Old Moses Camp, and you’ll have time to rest and acclimatize overnight.
Day 3: Trek to Shipton’s Camp
After breakfast at Old Moses Camp, you’ll begin your trek towards Shipton’s Camp (4,200 meters). This is a longer day of hiking, typically 6 to 8 hours, covering about 14 kilometers. The trail ascends through the lush moorlands, crossing rivers and offering breathtaking views of the mountain’s peaks.
As you move higher, the landscape becomes more rugged and alpine. You’ll pass Liki North Valley and Mackinder Valley, with the peaks of Mount Kenya becoming more prominent. You’ll arrive at Shipton’s Camp in the late afternoon, where you’ll settle in for the night. Here, the altitude really starts to make itself known, so staying hydrated and taking it slow is key.
Your Kenya Horizon Safaris guide will be monitoring your condition to ensure you’re adjusting well to the altitude.
Day 4: Summit Day (Point Lenana) and Descend to Old Moses Camp
Summit day is the most exciting and challenging part of your Mount Kenya climb. You’ll wake up very early, around 2 a.m., to begin your trek to Point Lenana (4,985 meters) under the stars. The climb to the summit takes about 3 to 4 hours, and as you near the top, you’ll witness the sun rising over the Kenyan landscape—a sight that makes the early start and tough climb well worth it.
After celebrating your achievement at Point Lenana, you’ll begin your descent. The path down is much faster, and you’ll make your way back to Shipton’s Camp for a quick rest. After refueling, you’ll continue descending to Old Moses Camp, where you’ll spend your final night on the mountain.
Day 5: Descend and Drive Back to Nairobi
After a restful night at Old Moses Camp, you’ll have breakfast and begin the final descent to the park gate. From here, your Kenya Horizon Safaris driver will be waiting to take you back to Nairobi.
You’ll arrive back in Nairobi in the afternoon, where you can either continue your journey or spend more time exploring the city. For those wishing to extend their adventure, Kenya Horizon Safaris offers incredible Kenyan safaris and beach vacations that can be seamlessly added to your itinerary.
