Return Button

Are you ready to take on the challenge of climbing Mount Kenya? Fantastic! This is the first step toward an unforgettable adventure. At Kenya Horizon Safaris, we’re here to guide you through all the questions you may have before, during, and after your climb, as well as your travel arrangements to Kenya. Our dedicated team is available to assist you every step of the way. Be sure to explore the information on our website and review the checklist provided below:

BEFORE YOU ARRIVE IN KENYA:

1. Read the INFORMATION on our website

We have compiled all the essential details on our website based on our years of experience with climbers from around the world. The more knowledge you have about the mountain, the better prepared you’ll be for your climb. Our resources cover everything from packing lists to altitude advice.

2. Check your VISA REQUIREMENTS

Each country has specific visa requirements. If you are unsure about your visa, it’s best to contact the Embassy of Kenya in your home country or check your government’s travel advice for Kenya. The online visa process is simple, but make sure to apply early to avoid delays.

3. Latest COVID-19 regulations

Be sure to stay informed about the most up-to-date COVID-19 guidelines for Kenya. Currently, no major restrictions apply, but it’s always a good idea to check the latest regulations to ensure smooth entry.

4. Take care of your VACCINATIONS

Consult your healthcare provider to ensure you’re up to date on the necessary vaccinations for traveling to Kenya. You may also want to ask about mountain medicine and other medications for conditions such as altitude sickness or personal needs. Vaccinations such as yellow fever, typhoid, and hepatitis are often recommended for travelers to Kenya.

5. Make a HEALTH CHECK

Before climbing Mount Kenya, it’s important to undergo a health check to ensure you’re fit for high-altitude trekking. Discuss any concerns with your doctor, and if needed, get advice on altitude-related medications that can help you on your climb.

6. Organize & book your FLIGHTS

Fly directly into Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) in Nairobi or Wilson Airport (WIL) for domestic connections. We recommend you communicate your arrival dates and times with us, so we can arrange a smooth airport transfer. Take note of Kenya’s time zone and climate differences to allow your body time to adjust after your flight. We also recommend taking a day to relax before beginning your climb.

7. Choose your CLIMBING ROUTE FOR MOUNT KENYA

There are multiple routes to reach the summit of Mount Kenya, each offering different experiences and levels of difficulty. Choose a route based on your fitness level, time constraints, and what kind of experience you’re looking for. Popular routes like Sirimon, Naro Moru, and Chogoria offer unique challenges and scenery. Reach out to us if you need guidance in selecting the best route for your climb.

8. PRIVATE CLIMB or GROUP CLIMB

You have the option to choose between a Private Climb or joining a Group Climb. Private climbs can be tailored to your schedule and preferences, offering a more flexible and individualized experience. Group climbs, on the other hand, are more economical and give you the chance to meet and connect with other climbers. Both options are available year-round through Kenya Horizon Safaris.

9. Prepare your personal LUGGAGE

Be mindful when packing your luggage. Ensure you have everything you need, not only for the climb but also for any other activities like a Kenya safari or exploring the coast. Keep your most important items in your hand luggage in case your checked bags are delayed. Any items you don’t need during the climb can be securely stored at your accommodation.

10. Prepare your CLIMBING GEAR

Refer to our detailed Gear List on our website to ensure you bring the right equipment for your Mount Kenya climb. Your gear will be divided into two bags: a Daypack (10kg) for your daily essentials and a Duffel bag (15kg) for the rest of your gear. Don’t worry if you don’t have everything—most gear can be rented upon arrival.

11. Start your WORKOUT

Physical preparation is key to a successful climb. Start hiking regularly to build up your stamina, and make sure your climbing shoes are broken in. Your workout routine should begin at least 6-8 weeks before your climb to help you prepare both physically and mentally for the challenge ahead.
